One of the extraordinary things about historical figures is that their most mundane possessions accrue a value completely at odds with their real worth.
Collectors long for that piece of the past, however small and however odd. A dental hygiene tool used by Charles Dickens, perhaps.
The toothpick in question was put up for sale by the heirs to the US book giant Barnes & Noble, and was expected to fetch $5,000.
It should be stressed that this was no ordinary toothpick. It's made from gold and ivory and it even retracts. Most importantly however, the revered author used it himself. There is even a letter penned by his sister-in-law (Georgina Hogarth) to prove its heritage.
Formerly used to pluck stray bits of sweet corn from Mr Dickens peppered teeth, the toothpick sold this week to an anonymous bidder for $9,150.
